A New School Year Brings New Opportunities
Serita D. BeamonAs we welcome students and staff back for the 2026-2027 school year, I can't help but feel a tremendous sense of optimism about what lies ahead. The start of a new school year reminds us that every student is beginning a new chapter filled with opportunity. New friendships will be formed, new skills will be learned, and new goals will be achieved. Together, we have the privilege of helping every child discover their potential and build a bright future.
This year, we have even more reason to celebrate. An incredible 95 percent of Seminole County Public Schools earned an A or B school grade from the State of Florida. That achievement is a testament to the dedication, passion, and hard work of the people who make our district exceptional. It reflects the leadership of our outstanding principals and school administrators, the deep commitment of our teachers and support staff, the perseverance of our students, and the partnership of our families who support learning every step of the way.
SCPS Portrait of a Graduate
At Seminole County Public Schools, academic excellence is only part of our mission. We are equally committed to preparing students for life beyond graduation. This year, we are excited to introduce our SCPS Portrait of a Graduate, a shared vision that reflects what our students, families, educators, staff, business leaders, and community members told us they value most in our graduates.
The SCPS Portrait of a Graduate serves as our North Star, guiding the work we do every day. It defines the characteristics we believe every graduate should possess – not only strong academic knowledge, but also the skills and dispositions needed to succeed in college, careers, and life. We aspire to graduate students who are rooted in character, resilient and self-aware, critical and creative thinkers, powerful communicators and collaborators, and engaged citizens prepared to thrive in an ever-changing world.
These qualities start to develop on the very first day a child walks into one of our schools. From those earliest moments, we begin helping students build confidence, curiosity, compassion, perseverance, and a love of learning. Every classroom lesson, every conversation with a caring teacher, every extracurricular activity, every challenge overcome, and every success celebrated contributes to shaping the person that child will become.
A Community Working as One
Developing these attributes takes time, intention, and an entire community working together. It takes inspiring teachers who encourage curiosity, school leaders who create environments where students feel safe and supported, staff members who care deeply about every child's well-being, families who reinforce learning and values at home, and community members who invest in the success of the next generation. Together, we help students discover not only what they want to achieve, but also who they want to become.
That is what makes Seminole County Public Schools so special. We believe education is about more than preparing students for a test. It is about preparing them for life. Every decision we make, every opportunity we create, and every relationship we build is centered on ensuring our students graduate with the knowledge, skills, character, and confidence to make meaningful contributions wherever life takes them.
As we begin this new school year, I encourage every student to embrace new opportunities, every family to stay connected and engaged with their child's school, and every member of our community to continue supporting the incredible work taking place across Seminole County Public Schools. Together, we will build on our tradition of excellence while remaining focused on developing graduates who are ready to lead, serve, innovate, and thrive.
