AdventHealth Profiles in Strength: Derek Lewis

For 35 years, Derek Lewis thrived in a high-powered career at PepsiCo, moving from city to city, taking on new roles, and constantly pushing himself to meet the demands of his job. Like many busy executives, his schedule was relentless. While he prioritized his health in many ways, certain medical checkups – like a colonoscopy – were easy to postpone.

In early 2022, as Derek settled into a new role, he began receiving friendly reminders from AdventHealth to schedule his routine physical. However, life got in the way, and he continued to put off his checkup. It wasn’t until Derek noticed blood in his stool that he realized something was wrong. At first, he dismissed it as an anomaly, but when it happened again two weeks later, Derek knew he couldn’t ignore the warning sign.

Derek scheduled a colonoscopy that resulted in a diagnosis of colorectal cancer; he needed to see a surgeon right away. Dr. Mark Soliman, colon and rectal surgeon at AdventHealth Altamonte Springs, immediately took over his care and guided him through the next steps.

“Derek seemed like the epitome of health,” says Dr. Soliman. “He had exercised and done everything right.”

Colon cancer is the second leading cause of cancer-related death. But, when detected early, it’s more than 90 percent curable. Thankfully, Derek’s cancer was detected early, meaning it had not metastasized to his liver or lungs. Surgery was the only treatment required – no chemotherapy or radiation was needed.

“The day of his operation, Derek approached it with the same determination as if it were a big football game,” recalls Sherene, his wife. “He said, ‘It’s game day.’”

Derek is thankful for the colorectal team at AdventHealth Altamonte Springs.

“Dr. Soliman and his entire staff provided exceptional treatment and care before, during, and after my surgery,” says Derek. “From day one of receiving the tough news, the staff kept me calm and confident about a positive outcome.”

Now cancer-free, Derek’s perspective on life has completely shifted. He believes his journey was part of a greater purpose, preparing him to embrace new opportunities and make a meaningful impact.

“I went from being a go-getter to becoming a go-giver,” he says.

Derek’s story is a powerful reminder that even the healthiest individuals are not immune to cancer. His journey underscores the importance of listening to our bodies, prioritizing preventive care, and embracing life’s challenges as opportunities for growth. By sharing his experience, Derek hopes to inspire others to take charge of their health – and to recognize that giving back can be just as fulfilling as achieving personal success.

Read more about Derek’s cancer journey in his personal growth memoir, Survive and Advance, tracing his rise from a tough 1970s childhood of hardship and abuse in Washington, D.C., to the highest levels of corporate success. Overcoming adversity, he rose from PepsiCo trainee to the C-suite, using his influence to champion equity, justice, and social change.
